You might have asked yourself the question, “Are cats low-maintenance or high-maintenance?” Before owning a cat, I used to think they were low-maintenance. Now, I laugh at myself for ever believing that. They are, in fact, very sensitive animals.
One thing you need to understand is that cats are very delicate. They have heightened senses. Which makes them more susceptible to anxiety and stress. Therefore, you need to have a scheduled routine and calming atmosphere. Without this, health problems can occur. Now, some cats are more sensitive than others. So, it is important you know who your cat is to the core.
Cats need multiple litter boxes, interactive toys, cat trees, scratching posts, and more. It is very important you constantly clean their litter box, as they will find other places to do their business if the boxes are dirty. That would be very unpleasant for you. Also, dirty litter can cause cats incredible amounts of anxiety and will lead to behavioral issues and other problems.
Interactive toys are crucial for stimulation. They are natural-born hunters so regardless if they are domesticated, they need to tap into their hunter side. So, toys that stimulate them are very good for their mental health. You can find all sorts of items at many places.
Cat trees and scratching posts give them more freedom when roaming around and being active. This is crucial because when cats become bored this can lead to depression. Anything that is mentally and physically stimulating for them, will keep your cat happy and healthy.
When feeding your cat, you should incorporate wet food. When researching throughout the years, I learned that wet food is great for cats since it’s high in hydration. At times, you may find your cat not drinking enough water so incorporating wet food helps.
These are just a few examples showing why cats are high-maintenance. If you are willing to put in the hard work and effort, you should be just fine.
